It is Christmas morning, 1987. I am three years old and eagerly waiting for my parents to wake up to watch me open my presents. At the time, my room was being renovated and my "bed" has been the living room couch for the past few months. The pine tree with all its glittering lights and ornaments teases me as my eyes are drawn down to the carefully wrapped boxes underneath. It is not the shine of the paper or the hint of a bow that brings my excitement. It is a large tan dollhouse with a bright red roof.
This is my fondest Christmas memory and my first experience with the world of Sylvanian Families. The Japanese company, Epoch, introduced these little dolls in 1985, both in their home country and North America. Its success soon spread to Western Europe. When the distribution company, Tomy, lost the rights to the name; they were reintroduced as Calico Critters and are still known by that name today. Now you will find these toys all over the world, from their homeland of Japan, to Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, the South Pacific and the United States. Many have found the charm of these animals irresistible and have amassed numerous collections. As a childhood fan, I am no exception.
Presented here, for your pleasure and mine, are my collection of figures, furniture and other pieces from the Sylvanian Families line. You will also find my collection of other toys both old and new as well as links to other collectors and sites that may be of interest. Please enjoy your stay!
